The restoration process of a Rand McNally 7-foot diameter geophysical globe.
2016 Preservation Award for "Outstanding Restoration."
Rand McNally 7-foot Diameter Geophysical Globe, University of Georgia, Athens. (click for slide show)
The Rand McNally mechanized geophysical globe after it was restored at the Geography Department, University of Georgia, Athens. It
measured 7 feet in diameter. Art conservator, Dimitri Nedelcu is applying a hand polish to the globe to protect the finish, as his wife, Georgiana Nedelcu restores
the southern pole.
There are only 3 of these Rand McNally monumental globes in existence: UGA, Athens, Princeton and Columbia University.
"For many generations, the UGA geophysical globe has been a focal point on campus, and has often served as a backdrop for photographs and television interviews. With restoration complete, the globe is as close to its original condition as possible, represents an important reminder of Cold War history, and remains an important teaching tool today. "
